About!
A Kingdom Hearts-specific [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw commentfic fest!
While the format is more or less kink-meme style, this fest is 100% fic friendly. By which I mean if you want to request/write G-rated gen fluff, that's perfectly fine! If you want to request/write dark non-con vore, that's also fine (and let's face it it's fandom, there's always someone into pretty much anything)! As long as it's properly labelled, GO FORTH AND FIC.

How to play!
1. If you want to read something, write a prompt! As long as you're not saying what you want step-by-step, it should be fine. [Edit]: I can't believe I even have to say this, but you can do as many prompts as you like. The more prompts there are there more will be written, after all!
2. If you want to write something, go look at the prompts! If something grabs you, write it! Doesn't matter if someone else has written something before, this is pretty much a free-for-all. You can also draw, if you like! Or do a combination of both, if you're really adventurous.
3. Rinse and repeat!

Rules:
1. If your fic is more than one comment long, please put the second comment as a reply to the first, just so they're not all replies to the prompt. Less clutter is good!
2. Don't be an asshat.
(This section. It will only be expanded if it needs to be. Let's try and keep it as it is, okay?)

ALSO. Please WARN FOR SPOILERS AT THE TOP OF POSTS. Definitely Birth By Sleep, but 358/2 - or, you know anything - is also appreciated. (This applies to both requests AND fills, just to be super-sure.)

*Commentfic: fic that fits in one or more comment-boxes. Can be as short as a drable or as long you like, as long as it goes in the comments.

Beginnings and Ends

I'm really sorry this took so long. I wrestled with it and then rewrote it, and now I like it much more. Oh, and in case you haven't played the game, Shadow the ninja and his dog Interceptor from Final Fantasy VI make a brief cameo. :D I need to finish that game one day.

Yuffie sometimes misses Traverse Town. She still remembers, in detail, the unhappy circumstances in which she arrived: in a gummi ship stuffed with people that had managed to scramble away, five of them squashed into Cid's two-man ship. There was a scuffle over who would get the other seat – in the end, it ended up being given to a teenager called Squall, whose face had been streaming with blood, his shocked and unresponsive gaze staring out at the thousands upon thousands of stars, unseeing. She'd never forget all the blood she saw that day, the metallic smell of it.

Despite Aerith's best efforts to heal the wound, the boy was left with a scar. He became Leon.

She never understood at the time, what had happened – she was seven. She thought it was an elaborate game, a joke, and she wanted to see her father's face when he knew she'd run away. Yes, he was still there, would be there as soon as their stone-faced pilot took them back from their heroic adventures across the stars. He'd shout at her, maybe even hit her for being so disobedient, but he never did act like he was worried. It'd be fine.

Yuffie clutched her father's shuriken closer to her like a blanket.

She remembers her excitement, on arriving in this new world: the constant night-time, the moogles to harass, stealing from people from other worlds and amassing all kinds of treasure (after his dog almost biting her hand off, she managed to make off with some fellow ninja's throwing stars), making an awesome secret ninja hideout in the underground waterway, throwing stones at peoples' doors and running away, and sleeping on rooftops. There was no one to boss her around except Cid's angry swearing and the equally grumpy Squall 'it's Leon' Leonhart, and half the time they were the butt of her pranks anyway.

She remembers her dread, when the first black creatures began to show, even there. She thought Traverse Town was safe. She thought it was still a game. She learned it wasn't when one tried to take her heart, and Aerith had to heal a gash across her chest. More blood and pain, just like that day they'd left home, hazy except the feeling of terror, pure dread that made her heart pound and her stomach churn like she was going to throw up.

Aerith had a quiet friend, with spiky blond hair and shocking blue eyes. He was constantly glued to his friend's side like a shadow, but Yuffie never remembered his name, he was so quiet. After a few years, he vanished and never came back. Aerith lost her spark, spent her time staring up at the sky, began to say very little, just like him.

It broke Yuffie's heart to see cheerful, serene Aerith in such a way, so she tried to fill the gap, to make her smile again. The two couldn't be more different, Aerith gentle and kind and so fond of dresses (ick, pink) and Yuffie preferring to wear what was easiest to scale a building in, and loud and ninja and badass and generally awesome and... Well, Yuffie still liked her, even if back home – home? What was home called, again? – she'd preferred to play with boys, who liked to fight and climb and get messy and not care. Not only that, but Aerith was older, only a few years younger than Leon. Despite all their differences, she was Yuffie's first female friend... really, the first female in her life at all, so it was interesting, different, and Aerith wasn't lonely any more. A win-win situation all round.

After a particularly bad assault on Traverse Town, when she was in her teens, one they all barely survived, Yuffie finally remembered. A story playing out in her head, like it had happened to someone else. A little girl, screaming as the streets were flooded with black creatures. Watching as they converged on her father, his shouts for her to run, to forget honour and simply survive, desperately pushing his shuriken on to her so she could protect herself, even their tiny little claws sinking into his chest--

And she'd run, blindly swinging her father's final gift left and right even though it was almost as big as her. She wasn't the make-believe heroine, the Great Ninja Yuffie, after all. She was a terrified child, and even if she didn't understand what she'd just seen, she'd known in her heart of hearts that he was gone, she was all alone.

Until a boy with blond hair took her hand and pulled her along to the gummi ship bays, to that tiny group of survivors.

It was Yuffie's turn to stare up at the stars above Traverse Town, as if she could somehow find him amongst them. Wonder if maybe he'd been on that star that just blinked out, or maybe that one? Cloud – that was his name, the one who had taken her to safety, the quiet little shadow pinned to Aerith. And now he was gone, and she'd never be able to thank him. Not only him, but she'd forgotten about her father. How, just like her mother, she would never seen him again. She was stunned she'd been able to wipe so much from her own memory, to deceive herself so much.

She'd let Aerith hold her in her arms that night, even as she cried a little, too shocked and exhausted to bother with her tough girl bravado.

After that long night of the Heartless attack, Yuffie remembers a tiny mouse-king arrived. He had round, black ears and the cutest little tail, but as she watched him, he was very serious and in deep conversation with Leon. The two shut themselves away in private for the longest time, until she was beginning to wonder if they'd fallen asleep mid-discussion. They hadn't, but ever since the little king left, Leon became obsessed with something called a Keyblade, that could fight Heartless and protect worlds from their destruction. He said he wanted to find a way to use it, to make it choose him.

It never did. The real Keyblade master came – much to Leon's initial chagrin – and everything changed.

She could go home.

It was a little sad, to leave. She was sixteen – she'd spent longer in Traverse Town than she ever had her real 'home'. She knows the alleys, rooftops, otherworldy travellers, the neverending night of the small town far better than the vague impressions, half-invented memories and confusion of feelings that she associated with home. But Aerith said their world had been beautiful, Leon reassured her he'd try to find a way for them to continue competing in the Coliseum tournaments (with a little help from Cid), and before long... a man with spiky blond hair and shocking blue eyes came back to them.

Everything comes to an end. But that's not so bad, Yuffie decides, when the future looks so bright.

Aah, I was going to do this prompt but I'm so glad I didn't now - it wouldn't look good next to this! ^_^ Beautifully written, very poignant and I like how you worked in all the other residents :)

Thank you! :) The AU-ness of KH is always so fun to play around with. But aww, I feel bad for putting you off. Prompts can be filled more than once, so if you want to fill it too, by all means!

Yeah, I think the KH verse is very flexible in that sense. And don't feel bad - you did me a favour because I was struggling anyway! :P
